The exotic and lovely from North to South

The park is the home for the orangutans, gibbons, monkeys, tigers, elephants and the Sumatran rhinoceros. Bukit Lawang - Bohorok is one of the popular places for tourist to see the orangutans.

When entering North Sumatra, you can visit the Great Bukit Barisan National Park in the Karo highlands, 66 km from Medan. Enjoy the Karoness culture a Batak Karo village with a number of traditional houses that are still being used in where eight families living together in every house. Then visit the fruit market of Berastagi.

Lake Toba is the famous lake at the heart of the Batak people. This is the largest lake in Southeast Asia and is one of the deepest lakes in the world (500 meters). In the middle of Lake Toba, is Samosir Island, the original home of the Batak Toba.

Off the coast of North Sumatra you'll find the island of Nias whose inhabitants were once enthusiastic head hunters. This custom has happily disappeared but one that remains is stone-jumping which requires the young men of Nias to hurl themselves over a stone monument more than two meters high. Formerly a method of entering enemy villages at night, this feat known as "Fahombe" is now performed as a test of prowess. It will certainly have you on your feet. A tropical paradise on every count, Nias will captivate you, not only with its glorious beaches, but also with its colorful flora, fauna, and fascinating community culture. 10 hours driving from Padang Sidempuan to West Sumatra you will meet the Bukittinggi highlands which are surrounded by three volcanoes: Tandikat, Singgalang and Merapi.

The more you explore the island, the more interesting experience you will get. Minangkabau culture in West Sumatra is the largest matrilineal society in the world. According to the local tradition, the Minangkabau derive their name from a victory in an ancient fight between the Sumatran and Javanese water buffalo over land ownership. Traditionally, the Minangkabau people live in multi-family longhouse named Rumah Gadang.

Mentawai Islands which is located around 180 miles from beach of Muara harbor - Padang, West Sumatra are consisted from 40 big and small islands. Between them is four big islands which is stayed the person, as the biggest island Siberut in the north, Sipora in the middle, North and South Pagai in the south division. In Mentawai Islands there is only hills which height doesn't exceed 500 meters. Generally develop land, flat with marshy. Step into the Pugung Archeological Site, from the megalith, pre- historic and classical Hindu Buddhist period. The site is located in the Pugung Raharjo village, 40 km from Bandar Lampung. In this area, a museum also has been build with the collection of stone inscriptions, ancient Chinese porcelains, Polynesian statues and the statue of Bodhisatwa.

One of the most popular handicrafts in Sumatra is the traditional hand woven cloth. In North Sumatra, they call it Ulos. Ulos Ragi Hotang a type of ceremonial mantle worn to announce the birth of a boy or used at wedding ceremonies. Songket from Minangkabau, a sarong or shawls woven in bold color silk combined with artificial gold thread. The motive is usually in geometric shapes. In Lampung, they make Tapis sarong, a woven cloth with embroidered gold couchwork.
